Beats collects heart rate measurments (from a Zephyr HxM) and analyzes them in both the frequency and time domain. While there is value in knowing our average heart rate, there is real information in the variations of our heart rate. These variations reflect various dynamic systems within our body. Some of the parameters calculated offer a descriptive "finger print" impression of some of these dynamics while others are more quantitative. The parameter with the most understood meaning is probably the high frequency power as it is an indirect (and still imperfect) measure of the activity of the parasympathetic system, via the vagus nerve. This branch of the autonomic nervous system generally has a calming influence. Our best understanding is that the degree of heart rate variations in a particular frequency zone is a measure of fatigue.
