This program analyzes heart rate measurments (from a Garmin, in this version) in both the frequency and time domain. While there is value in knowing our average heart rate, there is real information in the variations of our heart rate. These variations reflect various dynamic systems within our body. Some of the parameters calculated offer a descriptive "finger print" impression of some of these dynamics while others are more quantiative. The parameter with the most understood meaning is probably the high frequency power as it is an indirect (and still imperfect) measure of the activity of the parasympathetic system, via the vagus nerve. This branch of the autonomic nervous system generally has a calming influence. Our best understanding is that the HF power of heart rate variations is a measure of fatigue. The more rested we are, the higher HF power will be (because the parasympathetic system is more active).
